Brand new, clean bathroom in a new Sage home

Avoiding money down the drain

Flushing foreign objects down the toilet, or putting them down your drains can lead to blockages – and bills. So, avoid a charge, and follow our quick guide to getting rid of things in the right way.

Toilets are only designed to flush the 3 P’s: pee, poo and (toilet) paper. Flushing anything else could cause your pipes to block up. And while we’d always make sure your pipes are cleared, we have to follow our Repairs Policy, meaning you’d be liable to be recharged any costs caused by dealing with avoidable blockages.

What not to flush

Basically, don’t flush anything that isn’t the 3 P’s. Got other waste? Here’s where to get rid of it:

  • Cooking fat: let it cool, solidify and then scrape it into the bin.
  • Condoms, sanitary towels, tampons, panty liners, incontinence pads, used plasters/bandages, disposable nappies, liners and wipes: wrap them up in old newspaper and put them in the bin
  • Razor blades: put old razor blades in a solid container (like a cardboard box) before putting in the bin
  • Medicines: return all old medicines to your local pharmacy
  • Used syringes and needles: take these to your nearest disposal bank (ask your doctor or pharmacist if you don’t know where this is)
  • Any other waste that isn’t the 3 P’s: wrap in newspaper if necessary and put in the bin. If it’s a liquid, you can get rid of these at your nearest household waste recycling centre.
