Sizzle sausages safely

It’s sunny, your friends are free – sounds like perfect time for a BBQ!

Here’s some simple guidelines to make sure you stay safe when lighting the flames.

Our BBQ tips

1.  Set up your BBQ space properly
Stand the BBQ on level ground away from anything like houses, sheds, fences or low-hanging branches. It should always be outside (never in a tent or on a balcony) and keep all children, pets and games well away. Don’t use the BBQ in a heatwave or if there are any fire risks announced on the news.

2.  Nominate a chef-in-chief
The Chief BBQ-er is a title many crave. Make sure someone is always looking after the BBQ when it’s alight, and don’t drink and barbecue (save it for later). Follow any safety instructions provided if using a disposable BBQ.

3.  Cool it down
Burgers flipped, tummies full – make sure you extinguish the charcoal with water and dispose of it safely. Empty any cold ashes onto bare garden soil (not into your wheelie bin as it can melt the plastic) and wait for your BBQ to completely cool down before moving it. Using a gas BBQ? Turn off the gas cylinder before turning off the BBQ controls so any residue gas in the pipes gets used up.

4.  Store it safely
Make sure any gas cylinders are stored outside and away from direct sunlight or frost (never under your stairs). Your BBQ itself can live in the shed (when cooled down) or on the patio.
