Tips to help you prepare for an online interview

  • Test your technology in advance
Ensure a stable internet connection, a functioning camera and microphone, and that you have the required app (e.g., Zoom, Microsoft Teams) installed. A test call with a friend can help detect any technical issues.

  • Choose an appropriate setting
Find a quiet, well-lit place. Avoid distracting backgrounds and check that nothing inappropriate or disruptive is visible behind you. If needed, use a background blur or virtual background, available in most meeting apps. If you’re in a café, sit somewhere with minimal noise to avoid distractions for both sides.

  • Dress professionally
Even though the interview is online and often from home, dress as you would for an in-person meeting. Avoid staying in lounge wear - you never know if something unexpected will require you to stand up!

  • Join on time
Be ready to connect exactly at the scheduled time. If you’re on the move and might be late, inform the interviewer in advance.

  • Turn on your camera
Video is essential for an online interview. Seeing each other helps create a more natural and professional interaction. Make sure your camera is at eye level to avoid awkward angles.

  • Speak clearly and distinctly
Technical delays can occur in online calls, so speak slowly and clearly. Don’t cover your microphone while speaking. If the other person has trouble hearing you, offer to repeat your response. If you struggle to hear them, raise your hand or send a message in the chat.

  • Prepare answers to common questions
Just like in an in-person interview, think through responses about your experience, skills, and motivation. Keep a concise list of key points nearby. A major advantage of online interviews is the ability to have notes on hand - but avoid reading from them continuously. Use them as a reference, not a script.

  • Be natural and authentic
An interview isn’t just about facts but also about the impression you leave. Aim to be positive and relaxed to create a pleasant atmosphere.
