Female hand, lighting candles carefully at home

Staying safe this Autumn

As the evenings get darker you may be turning on the heating and lighting a few candles. Take a look at these fire and electrical safety tips to help make sure your home stays cosy, comfortable and safe over the coming months.

Fire and electrical safety hints and tips

  • Use heaters safely by sitting a metre away and keeping them away from curtains, furniture and clothes
  • Keep chargers uncovered so air can circulate and cool them down
  • Only plug electrical items in within your home - and not in any communal areas
  • Make sure electric sockets and extension leads aren’t overloaded
  • Avoid fire-related accidents by keeping candles and naked flames out of reach of children and animals. You can also use LED battery-operated candles for a safe, warm glow
  • To enjoy fireworks, consider going to a public firework display. Don’t ever set off fireworks or start fires near your home or on balconies.
