Watch out for TV license scams
TV license scams have been getting more sophisticated this winter. But don’t worry, there’s an easy way to stop scammers stealing your bank details. It’s as simple as Stop, Check, Ask
Stop:
Pause before you give away any personal information. Scammers will want to get your personal or bank details. Always be careful with any letters, emails, texts or phone calls that promise you money or a refund.
Check:
Look for any mistakes in the message. Has the sender spelt your name correctly? Are there any grammar errors? You can see examples at https://www.tvlicensing.co.uk/scam. Even if it says it comes from TV Licensing, tap the email address at the top of the email, and you can see the actual email address being used. If it shows a different email, it’s a scam email.
Ask:
If you’re unsure, ask someone like a friend, family member or neighbour. You can also go to the TV Licensing website and sign in at https://www.tvlicensing.co.uk/ to check if anything is wrong. If you prefer to call, you can speak to a TV Licensing advisor at 0300 303 9695.
Already entered your personal details on a suspicious site? Talk to your bank immediately, and report it to Action Fraud at reportfraud.police.uk. You can also call 0300 123 2040.
Got a scam email? Send it to report@phishing.gov.uk and the National Cyber Security Centre will investigate it.
Got a scam text message? Send a photo or screenshot of the message to textscam@tvlicensing.co.uk.
