Staying safe

Electrical appliances and equipment

Fires are sometimes caused by electrical faults so it’s important to inspect electrical equipment and appliances regularly, including leads, plugs, sockets and lighting. Please make sure that all electrical appliances have a British or European safety mark and check that high-powered appliances, such as washing machines, have a single socket to themselves.

Any electrical work in your home should always be carried out by an electrician registered with a government-approved body. You can search for registered electricians in your area on the Electrical Safety First website.

E-bikes and e-scooters

Fire incidents involving e-bikes and e-scooters are on the increase. Please take special care to ensure that:

  • Your battery and charger meet UK safety standards - you should only buy these from a reputable seller. Don’t modify your battery or charger in any way and always follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • You unplug the charger as soon as your e-bike or e-scooter is charged. Don’t leave it charging overnight
