Do I need permission to keep a pet?
Yes you do. If you’re living in one of our homes you will need to complete the pet request form on My Sage Home.
If you’re in the process of applying for a Sage home, you should list all your pets on the Pre-Tenancy Assessment form.
Does it matter what kind of pet I have?
Generally, you'll need consent for cats and dogs though this may not be required for certain pets. If you aren’t sure, please check with us whether your pet requires permission.

What should I do if I have an XL bully dog?
Following a rise in attacks and fatalities caused by XL bully dogs, the government has added this breed to the list of dogs banned under the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991.
If you own a Bully dog or puppy you will need to comply with all the new requirements. If you are not 100% sure whether your dog is an XL Bully, the government recommends that you take a precautionary approach and comply.
What are the new requirements?
Since 31 December 2023 it is against the law to:
- Sell an XL Bully dog
- Abandon an XL Bully dog or let it stray
- Give away an XL Bully dog
- Breed from an XL Bully dog
- Have an XL Bully in public without a lead and muzzle
From 1 February 2024 it will be a criminal offence to own an XL bully dog in England and Wales unless the dog has a Certificate of Exemption. Applications for this Certificate should have been submitted by 31 January 2024.
